I just finished a new piece of art. Now I know the first thing people always seem to ask is "What does it mean" or "What is it about" or "What is the significance of...." and the answer is - I don't know. It just came to me and so I draw it. The lighting is strange but that's because it's supposed to be. You'd think that everyone would be looking up, but that just didn't feel right. The distant portion would be lost in shadow but..... it is not reality, it is just what came to mind. What can I say? Think of it as a dream. It follows it's own rules with no regard to the norm.

Hi Tim, This is a very haunting painting. Since even you don't know what it means, that does make it difficult to comment. There is definitely an air of mystery, especially since the person who's "rising" is so much larger than the others. I'm reminded of the phoenix, rising from the ashes, but this one is rising from fire, so that puts a different spin on that story. I find the posture and facial expression of the woman in the dress to be disturbing...almost zombie-like. As you said, the "normal" reaction to someone rising up would be surprise and perhaps awe, but these people almost appear to have their attention focused elsewhere. Perhaps it means that even when one of us does something unusual or amazing, most people are so wrapped up in their own concerns that they don't even notice or care. For some reason, I'm struck by the hand of the man with his back to us. It is so much more realistic and detailed than the other figures' hands. I found myself wondering what he might be clutching in that hand, or what emotion he's holding onto. Literally on the other hand, the hands of the rising figure seem to indicate abandon, openess, or freedom. Like most of your visual work, this really makes me ponder, which often leads to some sort of inspiration or insight. I think it would be really interesting to see how others interpret this since it could mean so many different things to different people. Thanks for sharing this with us.

It's true, since the meaning is so undefined it can become whatever the viewer sees with no nudge towards being something specific. I'm sure an art therapist would have a grand old time interpreting it ;D
The figure rising is about double the size of the rest, perhaps a little less than double. It will be interesting to see if people have any impressions - I enjoyed seeing what you saw in it, Brigid, who knows, maybe some people will be inspired to write something.

I've got to say there is something a little spooky about this one... the girl in the pink dress... is more so... I'm going to be like Brigid and ponder but I have a feeling this is going to surface in my dreams tonight... that girl in the pink dress is going to haunt me I just know it!

The trick is to come up with a story about her that makes her not scary and then if she does show up in your dreams it will not be in a scary way It's amazing how much a simple posture can do - what is communicated in a pose. I think that is the key with her, the body language is just a touch off of what one might expect, I draw her with everything just a bit different in terms of her posture, slight bend here, arms at a bit of an odd angle - and suddenly she becomes spooky, disturbing. I think words are the same way, in poetry, a word that seems slightly different from what we expect can really throw us off and make a piece strange, sometimes spooky.

It makes me think that the person that is looming above is somehow turning those people into fully human beings but they haven't quite got there yet.
The color and light of the setting are marvelous.

Thanks, the lighting was a bit of a challenge actually since I wanted the elements of the picture to be seen and in reality much of it would have been just dark shadows, so I had to find a way to make it look right while allowing it to be seen. Much like TV shows where you have a scene in a darkened room but you are supposed to be able to see it all, so they use dim and defused like to give the idea of darkness while not actually making it very dark at all.
