Wow, eiken, I really like this. It conjures up a large world with the road and the river and then brings one right down to the personal level. It's very sad, yet there is a certain matter-of-factness about it, as if one would expect nothing else. Very nice. P.S. We miss you around here! Hope you are enjoying all your summer activities!

Brigid, The story behind this one is funny actually. I have a dreadful sense of direction and driving in Germany two weeks ago, I got lost so I followed the Moselle river thinking I would find my way home only to find myself heading for the French border, 50 km from Germany, I was following the road on the wrong side of the river.....I had to turn around and ask for help and finally got home. I had to laugh but yes, I was lost and it is a very big world when you don't know where you are

I like it - you have described the event you experienced but you have also captured a very deep thought.

the difference between despair and laughter is often just the passing of time.

This is a very clever twist of words. I can clearly in my mind's eye see this valley with the winding road and river and Eiken flowing with them. When one reads it though, one expects something else to come after the words "...I follow" like say, I follow both or I follow slowly. The switch to "lost" surprised me and and brought a fresh change of direction. Thank you Eiken.
