Hi Dianne, It's hard to tell from the picture whether this is an actual hole or depression in the rock or merely a stain. Since you say "carved", I'm assuming it's the former. I'd be interested to know about the size of the heart. It looks to be quite small, but without a reference point, it's impossible to tell. The mystery comes from whose heart is it? Some sort of saint or other holy figure? I think I'd be tempted to change the "carved in nature's hand" to "carved by nature's hand" in the last line. A very intriguing haiku!

Hi Brigid, I it's a little hole in the sandstone...my son found it on one of our walks...I couldn't believe it. It looks as if it's been made by the elements...I'd like to think so anyway. It was small but at the time I didn't think to give a size reference. I did think it should be by nature's hand but then I thought in sort of gives the impression it was both made and given so I left it... I just liked that idea.

Good for your son and his keen eye! So who does "her" refer to? Nature?
