Very topical - I've made a few attempts top write a poem about what is happening but so far it hasn't come together. I'm glad you wrote this.

Very meaningful, eiken. I love the idea of a double meaning---Japan, of course, but then the image of a new day dawning, always the symbol of hope, adds another dimension to this great haiku! The tragedy in Japan is horrible beyond comprehension. Brigid

Again, you reflect the subject perfectly... It's so tragic and terrifying what is happening in Japan.

As so many times before you've managed to say so much in so few lines. I especially liked the double meaning of the rising sun. Afterall, their flag is called 'the rising sun'.
That was a beautiful poem, and a sorrowful sigh in a short phrase. Thank you, Brigid.

It is very brave to take on a topic such as this.
I often find myself inspired by things going on in the world and put down some words but fall short of putting them "out there" for fear of being misunderstood or not doing the situation justice.
I applaud you for this attempt. A very clever poem (re: the double meanings) but also very concise and well presented.
Keep up the excellent work!

Dear all, Thank you for your lovely thoughts and comments on this haiku. I felt I had the earthquake, the tsunami or the meltdown for the first line but because the situation is ongoing with the nuclear reactor issues, I chose meltdown and you all got the double meaning of the rising sun which is really great and of course, a rising sun means so many things to all of us, a time of peace, beauty, hope, a new day dawning. My thoughts are with the Japanese people as they continue to grapple with the difficult situation. I am also reminded that mother nature can be very angry and I believe she is revenging at the moment as we continue to burn fossil fuels and destroy the planet. It is a subject I could write about forever so I better stop now. Thank you very much for your comments

I've been looking back over the old posts on the forum (especially in the Haikuland section) and found this one from several years ago. Wow, I'm blown away by the double meanings, so well expressed. Nice work, eiken. Cory
