POST MORTEM
I shouldn't be here.
Neither should you.
Our paths were never meant to cross
yet, tragically, they do.
You lie, perfectly still,
on the cold, hard, stainless steel table.
I reach out to you.
Not yet able
to accept the cold, hard fact of life
that is death.
I wasn't there
when you took your first breath.
I wasn't there
when you breathed your last.
I wasn't there
the three short months that passed
between the two.
I shouldn't be here now.
Neither should you.

Hiya John,
Welcome to the forum! This is a great debut. I got chills reading the last few lines. Very moving.
I hope you plan on posting more of your work.

Very nice poem. I wonder if you need to repeat "hard" and "cold"? Just a thought for you to consider or loose.
