Hi Brigid, Lovely! I guess you'd have to be a Tom Waits fan, as I am, to get the "grapefruit moon" reference. Perhaps others were thinking "who's Tom and why is he waiting?". Cory

Hi Lisa and Cory, Thanks for your comments. You're right, of course, Cory. The reference was to a Tom Waits song. He's a very different sort of singer/songwriter now, but still an awesome poet!

I did not get the reference the first time around, so thanks for the explanation. This is a very sweet piece, I like it.

I had to google tom Waits and I found his song on youtube. I love music, and being introduced to new music through poetry is fantastic.
Very clever. I like it.

Nice Brigid!
When do you put in the next stanza?
Just kidding . . .
I need to learn how to do these short ones!

Thanks Reilley, Deb, Tim, Sergio and Dan, for your comments. Dan, you crack me up. This is one of my long poems. The short version would be: grapefruit moon tom waits for me tonight

Dear Brigid,
But Waits is dead, isn't he?
Unless . . . is the poem about death brought on by long poems? Oh no! I'll surely get sued by someone's estate!
BTW, You do know that grapefruit mixed with allergy medicines such as Claritin can be deadly for some people? It's true.

No, Dan, Tom Waits is still very much alive. Even if he was dead, I, and kazillions of his other fans, could still have a "date" with him to listen to Grapefruit Moon or any other fave. You should check him out. You might like him. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN0uBPt0UOA Grapefruit Moon was recorded over 40 years ago. Although Tom's voice and style have "somewhat" evolved since that time, he is still going strong. In fact, he's something of an icon since his poetry (songwriting), music, and persona are so unique. So, long story short, nobody's estate will sue you.
