Beyond The Candelabras..... by dr todd harris
gray-staged clouds riding shotgun rise high rains filling vernal phantom lakes
Time disperses fame's hangers-on leaving few fanciful fashion choices silk excepting dusty record-sleeves
empty tumbled down buildings carry on mansions' memories discarded takes
childless legacies spawn life's greatest yard sales leaving tall trees' unwatered roots
passing years prune admirers' vines: thinning hair shorter lines
spinning steady ever-winding spirals: long playing helixes stereo DNA rebirthed soulful self-portraits far-away musical phrases framing yesterday's exacting poetry redacting tears away
melodies echoing unkempt marble floors founding forest's dust-polished crypt; pressed discs marking heaven's reunion doors ears exacting long practice's earnest scrip
tomorrow's tommows may silent pass absent persistent phonographs
wilted roses all receiving smile's gift dropped leaves all lifted-up
admiration's admirers sipping shared mortality's silver cup
adoration's future flocks trading mp3's filling pail cans watering long-parched trees
being remembered resembles pure paradise's pacer
old recordings lay waiting wanting:
unopened lonely-flowers requesting hungry bees
every watched clock swinging seconds' merciless eraser
lest somone minds the trees.....

I wrote this after watching the recent movie about Liberace's life - I visited the mansion as a guest just a few months after Liberace's untimely passing - like any great artist with no family to pass his legacy to, the winds of fate have blown harshly on the museum and Lee's memories - His music is the greatest gift, and that is what should be remembered most. All performers are mere mortals after all, but their musical recordings can live on - especially with Digital recording technology chasing tunes around the world on the WWW.
I hope you enjoy the poem - those of us of a certain age will remember things like record sleeves - perhaps even the Great Gildersleeve....regards and best wishes, dr todd

He was the sort of guy that had great admiration for admirers, wasn't he?
That was pretty cool, and well suited to the portrayal of Liberace and his life.
Keep writing!
