This does rhyme at times but as I was not thinking of rhyme while writing it and it does not follow any firm pattern, I view it as Free Verse:
Morning comes but night won't relinquish
Gathered darkness buried the sun
Waiting for escape from the torment
But the chariot never comes
Lightning flashes
Ebony eyes of pain
Nothing lasting
Reach for the end - to start again
And though there was no easement
Of torment no appeasement
We stood our ground and marched upon
The castle of the king
In hopes of secret knowledge
To free us from this burden
Although the air was filled with the sound of battle's ring
The halls echoed with sorrow
Harsh light obscured our sight
The cries stretched to the morrow
Our hearts were filled with fright
Pain and sorrow
Hopelessness fear despair
No tomorrow
Doom was seen - everywhere
And yet we could not leave there
Until we found an answer
Some way to make it through the darkness of our lives
When hope was torn asunder
And certainty a wonder
We held ourselves together
With a faith together shared
United in one endeavor
Hand in hand we made our way
Wipe the sweat from off each other
As we faced the waining day
Sleepless hours
Pacing from not and back
Endless towers
Climb to the top - and it's black
We burned in ice cold fire
In flames we shook and shivered
The pain sank deep
in our bellies to our souls
Lost within the darkness
Of never ending anguish
We clung so dearly to that final shred of hope
We bathed in cool the madness to stop
Battered and worn we reached for the top
Tore the snakes from our arms
And rose - still defiant.
