I visited a friend. Her cat was small and tortoiseshell coloured and quite different from mine but I found I could still converse with her in cat language. So just for fun I am writing this whilst my big fat black and white pet Spice sticks her claws into my leg to demand attention. ESSENCE OF CATShe may be thin and tawny, or she may be black and fat, but whether stout or scrawny She’s the last aristocrat. She may choose on fish to dine, or hunt down mouse or rat, but in essence she’s a feline and none can alter that. In the moonlight she may be, with a choir, singing flat, or from a tree cry “rescue me”, the epitome of cat She may sleep upon your chest, or she may settle on your mat. She’s the kitten you've been blessed with, she’s the ragged puddy tat. She may sit upon your paper, she may decorate your flat. Her tail may fluff or taper, but she’s the quintessential cat

Hi Neal, What a great poem! You have, indeed, captured the essence of cat, which was, thankfully, a different essence than the one toms use to mark their territory! Your keen observations and Spice sitting on your lap also strike me as the essence of love for the essence of cat. I read this to my husband (also a cat lover) and, even though he's not much into poetry, he agreed with me that is was a most enjoyable work!

Thanks Brigid. It was hastily done and mostly fun but I do love the furry beasts

It was a fun little read - my room mate's cat seemed to like it

Thanks Tim & Dianne. Cats are great poets too you know. They don't actually deign to write down the words themselves but they get their humans to do the work for them. The ideas come from the cat.

It's time to bring this one back for any of you "feline-atics" who may have missed it!
Classic cat at its best!

That was wonderful. I've had three cats in my life - all were different in some things and similar in majesty. Dogs have owners, cats have staff. Nice poem.
