Are you like me in that you get discouraged when it seems that no one is reading what you post? Here are a few suggestions for getting more people to read and comment on your work:
1. Read and comment on the work of others. That's the way we get to know each other on the forum. Everybody likes to get feedback on their work and people are more likely to comment on your work if you have shown interest in their work. Check in on the forum often, even if you don't have new work to post. Take the time to read a few poems by other people and to tell them what you think.
2. Always respond to the comments people have made on your work, even if it's only to say "thanks for your comment". If someone takes the time to comment on your work, and even better, gives you an extensive critique, let them know you appreciate it, even if you don't agree with everything they say. Back and forth discussion is welcome here. Most of us are not experts and we can learn a lot from each other.
3. Participate in our challenges (in the Come Out and Play section). It's a great way to show off your work and interact with your fellow poets, as well as being a lot of fun!
4. If you have a Twitter account, tweet about your work and post a link to it. This will at least guarantee that more people will read your work. The more you tweet about it, the more people will read at it. (This also applies to Facebook).
5. Invite your poetry-writing friends to join our forum. The forum is a handy place to share your work. Bringing your friends to the forum will automatically give you a larger audience.
6. If you have a blog, post a link to our forum there.
7. Don't be bashful about your poetry, even if you're just starting out. Share it with the people you know. Surprise someone with a poem in one of your emails. Then you can tell them where they can read more (here!)
If anyone else has some tips about increasing readership, please feel free to post them here.
