Does poetry need be dark by definition? Have you found occasion to celebrate the light? Can you call upon that positive passion to inspire you? Can you recapture the joy and share it with us now? Whether it is a poem of the past or something new, please share. If you decide you'd like constructive criticism, post it in the appropriate forum with a bidirectional link. Save comments here for the posting of poems and only general impressions of those poems please. Thanks.

Hi Callisse,
Thanks for the challenge! Of course poetry doesn't have to be dark by definition! Poetry can reflect as many different moods or feelings as a human is capable of having, including a combination of feelings, such as bitter-sweet memories. I would say that most of my own poetry is not dark---yeah, some of it is, but nowhere near as much as the darkness inside my own head! I do tend towards the sardonic at times which is a kind of darkness mixed with humor.
I guess I would point to my poem "Invitation" in Free Verse as the most recent example of "un-dark" poetry from me.

I knew that good poetry came come from happy things ... though I must admit that more of my poetry comes from expressing the darker events in my life but there is always light to balance the dark.

I think that poetry exists to express, and there is just as much to express about joy as there is in the darker elements of the human condition. I mean, how many love poems are there in the world? Granted, love poems can and do apply to both sides of the coin ;D
Like Tim, I have several pieces about the joyous as well as the dismal, they are just not posted to the forum yet. But they will be.
Peace.

I like to think that a wide range of themes and moods draw me into writing poems - perhaps the most powerful stimuli are the light of love and the dark of despair, though what the balance of those might be I hesitate to suggest.... One of my own preferences is to offer tales with a twist in their tail now and then, just to keep folk guessing. Best wishes, Dave

Perhaps this recent shorty fits the positive profile...
One Of Nature's Better Tricks
You must always smile no matter what, it makes others wonder what you've got, it also lifts your mood each time, and that can soothe a troubled mind.
So even when your skies are grey, you surely can improve the day with just that curving of your lips, it's one of nature's better tricks.....
